Knaresborough Urban – 27 May 18

Organiser’s Comments (Richard Kirk)
Thanks to everyone who came along to enjoy some entertaining navigating up and down Knaresborough’s hills and along and through its various ginnels and hidden corners.  Results are here. The weather cooperated after a worrying series of wet and cold days — and the crowds came out.  I hope that no one feels that their winning run was spoiled by people jams on some of Knaresborough’s narrow stone stairs!
We were lucky this year to have the use of facilities at the Henshaws Arts and Crafts Centre which afforded an excellent run in – and a devilish final control which caught a few of you out – but compensation in the form of rather a good café not 20 paces from Download.
As always, the CLARO machine swung into action to make my job simple and straightforward.  We enjoyed putting the event on and hope you had as much fun on your run.  We look forward to next years CLARO Urban.

Planner’s Comments (Ruth Ker)
From me, simply, thank you.  To Richard (organiser), Graham (controller) and Mike (long-suffering map up-dater) for such slick contributions.   To you all for coming and for your generosity of warm-hearted compliments and appreciation of my efforts to entertain and to catch you out (successful in many cases it would appear).  It makes it all worthwhile when you have enjoyed yourselves.    I would love to see your run on RouteGadget (please).

Claro Weekly News

Claro top 10s

Claro Runners have been competing afar in the last 2 weeks. Over the weekend in Balmoral at the British Champs, and for some reason the Queen wasn’t there to welcome them, Ruth Ker was 10th on W50L, Mike Hind was 19th on M65L and Liz Potterton was 24th on W60L. Combined as Claro’s Scottish Adventurers they were 19th in the Ad-Hoc class on Sundays relays.

Meanwhile, on eerily quiet roads on Saturday at the 4hr NYMBO from Grewelthorpe, despite a lacklustre start Tim Evans was 3rd V50 and 5th Overall, Adrian Parker was 9th V40 and Jemima Parker and Jo Anderson were 2nd W50. On Sunday Jackie Barnes was 7th on Short Green on the PFO event at Brun Valley. At the BAOC event at Woodthorpe Ruth Ker was 1st Woman and 2nd O/A on the Light Green

The previous week Tim Evans was at the annual MTBO camp in Denmark, his best results were 9th M55 in Camp Cup race 3 and 16th overall in the Hoker the final ultra long race. The picture is from the crying mile. This event had 20 controls a course length of 1 mile and a map scale of 1:1666, this was part of the evening entertainment.

Knaresborough Town Centre Race Sunday 27th May

CLARO are organising an Urban event this Sunday starting from Henshaws, where I am advised there is also an excellent Cafe. Ruth Ker has planned some excellent courses. A newly updated map at 1:4,000 has been prepared with additional parts of the town centre and Conyngham Hall that have not been used before. There are excellent opportunities for off-road junior courses. This event has a castle, river, railway, bridges, ginnels, steps…… Full details are on the website here. I hope to see many of you there.

Event Safety Workshop.

We are running another event safety workshop on the 23rd May and have space for a few more volunteers. British Orienteering require that anyone who plans, organises or controls an event has to have attended this course. The course lasts about 3 hours and is a lifetime award so you don’t need to renew, so if you are thinking of planning a lamp-o or one of the spring flowers you would need to have attended one of these workshops. If you are interested please contact Vince or Tim.

Colin John

Club members who knew Colin will be saddened to hear that he passed away this Monday, following a serious heart attack. Colin moved to us from DVO in 2013 and helped control and plan a number of events including the Compass Sport event at Guiscliff. Colin was previously a member of AIRE before CLARO formed and he moved south through work in the 1980’s. Our thoughts are with Jacqui his wife and the rest of his family.
