Weekday Evening Events

The club runs weekday evening events for much of the year.  Between September and Easter these are street events in a score* format with a mass start, split into a pre-Christmas ‘autumn’ series and a post-Christmas ‘winter’ series. These generally use simplified street maps, as illustrated in the picture above.  After Easter, when the evenings are light, we move into local parks and woods, using standard orienteering maps and electronic punching, for the ‘spring-summer’ series. These are usually cross-country* courses, but other formats are used for variety! Details of the current series are available on the relevant post, via the Home and Future Events pages, whilst past series are available through the Results page.

Autumn and Winter Planning Guide (to be updated)

* Score format: each control is given a points value, and competitors gain as many points as possible within a set time limit. If they exceed that time, they then start having points deducted from their score. For autumn and winter series events, the normal format is 30 controls available in 45 minutes, 20 points value per control, 10 points penalty for each minute late back. Cross-country format: Courses consist of a series of controls that have to be taken in a certain order, with results determined by the time competitors take to complete the course. Sometimes referred to as ‘linear’ orienteering. This is the most common format for the sport, and the one which all major races use.
