All courses are open to everybody, although under British Orienteering rules Under-16s may only run courses 1-6 if accompanied by an adult (non-competitively for league purposes). Entrants will be automatically assigned to the most appropriate league class on the course entered. MOpen will include all over-16 entrants on course 1. As neither the UK nor the Yorkshire League as yet includes a Grander Vet class (85+), MGV runners will score points in MHV by adding their results to the end of the MHV list. WGV and WHV will be included together as one class for league scoring purposes. Course 8 is all off road, Course 7 is primarily off road, but includes some quite estate roads with pavements; both courses remain urban in nature. Course 9 is designed to be accessible using wheeled transport, but is open to all (including juniors as all on paths and quiet estate roads).
Map: 1:4000. The 2017 map has been updated and extended 2026 by Quentin Harding and Andrew Kelly.
Start: Main start: 400m from assembly. Course 8 start 200m. Finish: adjacent to school
Terrain: Wetherby is a small market town with interesting nooks and crannies, surrounded by housing development of differing ages and characteristics, providing a varied range of route choice decisions. The old railway line network has largely been preserved as joint pedestrian/cycle ways, which, along with the town’s surprisingly extensive parkland, both adds to the interest and provides the framework for the junior courses.
Transport: The Number 7 bus operates hourly between Leeds and Harrogate via Wetherby. The X98/99 also operates hourly between Leeds and Wetherby. Wetherby Bus Station is a 12 minute, 1km walk from St Joseph’s.
Parking: Parking will be available in town centre car parks and in residential streets to the north of the school and old railway lines. More information in final details, but it should be noted that the Station Gardens car park in the south-west of Wetherby is out of bounds, and that competitors must not attempt to park in the congested residential streets immediately around and to the south of the school, both potentially giving offence to local residents and compromising your result!
Main officials: Richard Kirk (Organiser), Andrew Kelly (Planner), Kerensa Welsby (Assistant Planner), David Day (Controller). For entries queries, contact the Entries Secretary, Linda Kelly, at entries@claro-orienteering.org.uk
