Back to Orienteering – Summer 2020

British Orienteering has now approved the restart of ‘proper’ orienteering events but with some tight guidelines. Particularly that you must enter the event in advance and will be given a start window. Please read the instructions below carefully for full details. We are planning three events on Wednesday evenings:

Date Venue Details Start times Results
12 Aug Jacob Smith Park, Knaresborough Streetmap Details StartList Results
26 Aug Hell Wath, Ripon Streetmap Details below StartList Results
9 Sep Pinewoods and Harlow Hill Streetmap Details below StartList Results

Note on Pinewoods Results

Control 210 was hung in the wrong place and several people were affected quite a bit, so the legs to that control have been excluded: 11-12 on Long and 4-5 on the Medium.

Pinewoods and Harlow Hill details – Planner, Ruth Ker

We will be concluding Claro’s series of Wednesday evening events celebrating the return of orienteering with a jaunt into The Pinewoods and Harlow Hill on Wednesday 9 September.   The start window will be shifted forwards so that those who wish to run in good light can start early and those who want to make it more exciting can start later.  If it’s a dull day, you may wish to bring a head torch whatever time you start as it can get dark under the trees.

The map is being extensively updated by Ruth and Quentin so hopefully you will find it quite a novel experience even if you have run here many times before.   You can play spot-the-difference with your new and older maps after the event.

Unusual map scale of 1:5500 (as big as I can make it for you and still fit on the piece of paper).

SI Air will be used with dibbing for the start and finish.

There is no urban running this time so terrain footwear is ideal.  Leg cover is a good idea (it is September after all) in case you pick a less than elegant route.

3 varied courses as before.   Short course will cross no roads.  Medium and Long courses will cross a minor road twice.

Short yellow 1.4k no roads to cross
Medium light green 3.6k a minor road to cross twice
Long light green 4.6k a minor road to cross twice

Head to the junction of Harlow Moor Drive and Margaret Road and you will be able to see the Claro banner, start and finish, just into the park, towards the top of the open area before the woods begin.   The area is a short walk from Harrogate Train and Bus Stations.  Parking is freely available on local streets.  There are public toilets further down into Valley Gardens (on the way up if using public transport) however these may close sometime between 5 and 6pm.

Pre-entry essential by midnight Monday before the event (see details below)

Start Time Windows for Pinewoods and Harlow Hill will be from 1715 to 1845:

1715-1730, 1730-1745, 1745-1800, 1800–1815, 1815-1830, 1830–1845.

Courses close 19.45.

We may consider extending if demand warrants.

Entry Fees: £4.00 per adult; £2.00 juniors; Families £10.00; SI card hire £1.00

Claro Covid Secure Entries

In accordance with the guidelines produced by British Orienteering for the resumption of orienteering in England all events are to be pre-registration only, with no entries taken on the day. This will allow Claro to manage the number of participants, in order to comply with restrictions on the size of gatherings, avoid queues of people on the day, and minimise the need for face-to-face interactions.

All participants taking part in orienteering must use a pre-registration system which records specific details about competitors. This will allow Claro to share information with NHS Test & Trace should it be required. This information will be retained for 21 days, unless it is necessary to retain it for longer for another purpose.

By entering this event competitors acknowledge that they must not attend if they or a member of their household has COVID-19 symptoms, or if they have been asked to isolate by NHS Test and Trace, and that they will abide by the Participant Code of Conduct at all times.

SI cards must be hired prior to the event, as part of the pre-registration process. Cards will be cleaned and individually bagged prior to issue at the event.

Entries and SI card-hire fees should be paid before the event by bank transfer to the club account. Claro will provide a full refund to anyone who needs to withdraw their entry because they or a member of their household has COVID-19 symptoms, or because they have been asked to isolate by NHS Test and Trace. If the event has to be cancelled or postponed at short notice, including as a result of a change in local or national restrictions we will refund entry fees, less any administration costs, or credit the fee towards the next Claro event.

Start Times

Government guidelines state that no more than six people, including any officials, must be present in the immediate start area at any one time, and social distancing must be maintained between people from different households. Therefore competitors will be allocated a fifteen-minute start window. No more than ten entries will be allowed to start in any fifteen-minute window and they must start at least one minute apart, regardless of whether or not they are on the same course, unless they are in the same household (or support bubble).

We will ensure that there are some free slots in the start list so that people who miss their allocated slot do not need to wait at the start area for a long period.

We will try to allocate each entry their requested time slot but if full we will allocate the nearest one available.
