Conyngham Hall 2nd June (inc. Yvette Baker Trophy heat)
Claro welcome you to this summer event set in the attractive parkland surrounding Conyngham Hall, Knaresborough. A range of courses, suitable for all ages and abilities, will be available. We are also delighted to be hosting the Yorkshire and Humberside heat of the Yvette Baker Trophy.

Travel: Knaresborough station is 10 minutes walk from the event centre. There are regular direct trains from York and Leeds. If arriving by car/minibus, there is a public car park at SE345571, what3words drill.universes.outline. Cost £1.80 for 2 hours, £3 for 4 hours, but best to arrive early as it can get quite busy. There is additional on-street parking within 10 mins walk.
Timings: Enquiries open 1000, Starts 1030-1200, Courses close 1300.
Terrain: an attractive park by the River Nidd with fields and some woodland. There are plenty of paths for the less technical courses and some trickier areas in the woods for more experienced orienteers. A newly updated map by Quentin Harding will enable the planner to use the area to the full!
Courses: White, Yellow, Orange, Light Green and Green (see colour explanations below). After their competitive run children will be allowed (and encouraged!) to do another course for free. Start times will be 10.30 till 12.00 and courses close 1pm. Please start early if you might take more than an hour or wish to run twice.
Facilities: The Kiosk is a community cafe, serving a variety of hot and cold drinks and snacks. After your run, have a go at Crazy Golf and/or Pitch-and-Putt!
Yvette Baker Trophy: This is the national interclub competition for junior teams. Details of this competition, including which courses to run, are available here.
If clubs wish to pay the entry fees for their team members, Yvette Baker team captains should contact the Claro treasurer (treasurer@claro-orienteering.org.uk) who will assign them a payment code which team members can use to enter the event in Racesignup. We will then invoice the club for their team’s entries. They will need to pass on a Racesignup code to their competitors.
Colour gradings: orienteering uses a similar system to judo, grading the physical and technical difficulty of the courses by colour. A brief summary of each colour is given below. Age ranges are very approximate!
White: shortest and easiest, normally all on paths, and controls at each decision point. Aimed at primary age beginners.
Yellow: all on line features (eg paths, fences, streams), with one or two decisions between controls. Aimed at primary age experienced, secondary age beginners.
Orange: navigation involving moving away from line features, cutting corners, using simpler compass techniques. Aimed at younger secondary age experienced, older secondary and adult beginners.
Light Green: as Orange, but now including some contours, finer map detail (eg vegetation changes) and more compass for navigation. Aimed at experienced younger secondary age, and intermediate older secondary and adults.
Green: as technical as the area will allow. Followed on by Blue, Brown and Black, all at the same technical standard, but increasing in distance. In more demanding terrain, the three ‘B’s can also be more physically challenging in other ways too!
