Club League 2024
With the holding of the Beecroft night event, the 2024 Club league results have been finalised. This league looks at the results of all our club members who have taken part in any of the 12 events that we have either put on as a club, or where a significant club participation was expected, and where the SI timing system was used. While there are some shortcomings in the way this is all calculated, I do generally agree with the way it tries to reflect and allow for variation in everyones’ performance due to gender, age and orienteering experience. The 2024 league saw 64 club members post 293 results in this year’s league events.
Within the junior competition it was good to see some new faces appearing near the top of the league, I hope that Thomas and Ralph are inspired to attend a few more events next year. But for 2024 the trophy returns to Toby Rochester for a second year. His win last year does appear to have helped stimulate further improvements in his orienteering this year, he now matches his brother Matthew for the number of wins of this junior trophy. It may be that the junior competition should require fewer events to score as the Junior winner Toby was the only junior to attend 7 events, lesson learnt.
In the senior competition I have been deliberately trying to influence the league so that the trophy visits as many new homes as possible. To this end I instigated a consecutive win rule, an ability to only win it once in an age group, and a cap on the maximum points a previous winner can score rule. Ruth still managed to top the league table, but having won the trophy last year meant that she could not have the trophy again, I can therefore announce a new winner, Will Drewe. Hhis win by only one point from Stephen Fry was by virtue of Will’s max score on the last event that he planned, all such top officials get 100 points for their efforts, sorry Stephen. Stephen moves up to M60 in 2025 so he should score better if he doesn’t slow down. Just behind these two was Vicky Bailey and David Day, all four within seven points of each other.
Sean Molloy and Katie Gray attended the most events with 10 of the 12 on offer, maybe trying the adage of practice makes perfect.
The events for 2025 have yet to be identified but it will include the urban event around Harrogate on Sunday 19th January.
May you enjoy running during 2025 in sunlit forests and streets.
NB The nature of the Jacob Smith Park event in the table meant that meaningful points could not be awarded. The only beneficiary is Kevin Francis who planned/organised the evening. This is a tactic that I hope does not gain popularity.
