Planner’s Comments

The second event in a weekend of orienteering, hosted in conjunction with BAOC. For the first event, on Saturday night at Brimham Rocks, see HERE.

Please see the note about a new lift and car sharing scheme under Directions. CAR PARKING WILL ALSO BE TIGHT.  PLEASE CAR-SHARE.

Ellington Banks is mostly a runnable mixture of coniferous and deciduous areas – a pleasant surprise for those remembering it from 20 years ago (when it was known as Hollins Head).  There is a reasonable network of tracks and paths with scattered army structures. Part of the area is open, scrubby and boasts earthworks, deep ruts and tank wallows.

Public transport: There are no public transport links serving the event venue, but please read note on car sharing.
Car sharing/lifts: After discussions on climate change at the Claro AGM, we are testing out a new car sharing scheme when you enter. You will be able to offer a lift, request a lift or both. Racesignup will let you know of other orienteers nearby who have also signed up to the scheme and you will then be able to get in contact and arrange your transport. We hope this will make it easier to contact people near you. Please feedback to entriesATclaro-orienteering.org.uk and let us know how you find it and we can feed back to Racesignup as it is still in the early stages of development.
By car/cycle.  Best route from most directions is to go to Ripon first, either by way of Junction 50 on the A1(M) and the A61 (if coming from the north) or via Harrogate.  In Ripon take the unclassified Kirkby Road NE past Ripon’s Holy Trinity Church, signposted Grewelthorpe and Kirkby Malzeard.  The event will be found on the left 2.5 miles from the centre of Ripon.  The event will be signed at its entrance and there will be advance warning signs placed on Kirkby Road to the NE and SW of the entrance.

CAR PARKING:  Free parking on hard standing adjacent to registration/download

REGISTRATION/DOWNLOAD:  Indoors adjacent to the car park. Registration open 10-12, Start times 1030-1230, Courses close 1400. Remember to give yourself enough time!

TERRAIN:  Most of the competition area is an army training facility.  It lies on a plateau with gentle slopes falling away to the NE, has a good network of tracks and paths and is of variable runnability.  The rest of the army facility is open, partly scrubby and contains various earthworks comprising banks, tank wallows, depressions and deep ruts. The balance of the competition area is in private ownership and comprises gentle slopes to the south of the army area with one or two crags in the far southern section..  There are fewer paths and the area has reasonable runnability with some rough  undergrowth.

NOTE:  There will be up to 40 Army personnel on foot only within the competition area.  They will be active on non-orienteering matters.  They have been briefed of our presence and will try to keep out of our way.  The Safety Brief will ask competitors to nevertheless take care to avoid contact/collision.
