Event details.
CLARO and BAOC join forces to invite you to a world premier in the unique venue of Harrogate Army Foundation College. Newly mapped by John Lebeter, Quentin Harding and Ruth Ker. Explore the barracks, courtyards, training tracks, armoured vehicles, assault courses, military artefacts, biking tracks, shooting ranges and trees planted in very straight rows.
Courses for all including Accessible, Grander Vets (85+) and Juniors (campus is car-free). Run your age class to be included in the YHOA Urban League. Or run any course you fancy. The courses will be nearly full length urban distances with a high density of controls. Super training opportunity before the competitive sprints of the JK and British. Test your ability to focus and not mis-punch!
Varied terrain, mostly of an urban campus nature, with some unusual army areas, some on softer surfaces. Some parts are muddy due to cadet training activities – the longer courses visit these while the shorter courses less so. The course list below provides details so you can make an informed choice of course. Courses 1-3 will have more than 30 controls; please make sure your SI card can handle these numbers (some older types can’t).
Travel
On foot or by bicycle: Come to the gate on Penny Pot Lane at Grid: SE 26868 55576, W3W:colonies.worms.terms.
Bus: By number 4 bus from the bus station in Harrogate centre (adjacent to the train station). Hourly at 00:25. Returning at 00:45. Ride 20 minutes. Dismount at bus stop called Penny Pot Lane (just before the Army College one).
Car: Ample parking (400+ cars) is available on the Hildebrand Barracks car park at Grid: SE 27018 55790, W3W: gladiators.slept.goodbye. Entrance to the car park is from Penny Pot Lane onto Oak Avenue at Grid: SE 26970 55547, W3W pods.stung.troll. The car park will not be marshalled, please park sensibly. The walk to the registration will be taped and is no more than 400mtrs, however care should be taken when crossing the road as it is a busy fast road.
There is room for a very small number of cars just outside registration which may be used by Accessible and MW85+ competitors.
Dogs are welcome in the car park, around the car park and down as far as the sports pavilion which houses assembly.
Facilities: Registration and enquiries will be in the Sports Pavilion at Grid: SE 26835 55397, W3W: cowboys.utter.baker
- Toilets and water are available inside the Sports Pavilion.
- Tea and Coffee making facilities will be available if you wish to stay for a brew – please wash your mug.
- Showers are available if required with ample changing room space throughout the building. Limited lockers with keys – first come first served.
- Please change and leave kit bags in the changing rooms as these are roomy whereas space in the assembly room is limited.
Start for all except Accessible: 120m from assembly on grassy path. No start times allocated. Turn up and run. Starts from 12.00 to 13.30. Will be extended if needed.
Finish: 60m from assembly. Courses close 3pm (start early if you wish to take your time).
The Accessible Course starts at the finish. For you only, clear and check at assembly after which you will be given your loose descriptions and your folded map. Proceed to the Finish (which you passed on arrival) where Gareth will produce your Start SI box from his pocket. The finish kite is also you start kite. Open your map as soon as you have punched the start box. Also note that, for ease, you may park on the approach road to assembly.
Courses (provisional, subject to final controlling):
Note that course combinations are different to usual and to those used at Harrogate East so please check which one you are entering. YHOA Urban League age class courses are shown below. Otherwise choose whichever course most appeals to you. The campus will be car-free so juniors may run any course if they are not competing in the league.
There is grass (mostly flat, some banks) on all courses. There are also muddier areas where the cadets train. These will vary dependent on recent weather conditions. On courses 1-4 you may prefer shoes with grip. Dobs are not advised as all courses are still predominantly on hard surfaces.

Lengthy Description Sheets: Courses 1-3 have a lot of controls and, unsurprisingly, long loose descriptions. If you own two description holders you could tear them in half at the TURN MAP point and have both separately. Or you could fold them at the same point and extract and turn them over. Or another creative method of your devising…..
Mapping:
Map drawn to ISSprOM19-2rev.6 at 1:3000 with 2.5m contours. Printed by BML on SRA4 waterproof paper; one or two sided as listed above. Descriptions both on the map and available loose at the start (or registration for Accessible course).
There is no legend on the map so please study one in advance if necessary. There are two non-standard symbols on the map: o used for military artifacts and o-o for a very large see-saw.
Temporary seating has been erected around the Parade Ground ready for a Graduation Parade. It is too late for us to add this to your map. Be assured, you can get around it and to all your controls without difficulty.
No buildings are to be entered and only use gates that are mapped as open.
There are pieces of military hardware/apparatus, whilst interesting the organiser has requested that competitors do not to climb on them.
All competitors are to report to download regardless of if they finish or not. Failure to do so may jeopardise future events within the college grounds.
Photography: Wendy Carlyle (AIRE) will be in attendance taking photographs. Please see Claro’s photography policy if you have any concerns.
Planner: Ruth Ker (Claro). Controller: Quentin Harding (Claro). Organiser: Gareth Radcliffe (BAOC).
