Final Details

ENTRIES are now closed. Owing to the unexpected cancellation of a Compass Sport Cup heat we had a large number of last minute entries. If you CANNOT now run please email our entries secretary, Linda, at entries@claro-orienteering.org.uk so your place can go to someone else. If you would like an entry, email her, and we will let you know if a place becomes available.

CARS: The National Trust is understandably concerned that we will fill the car park and prevent the public using it. If you are planning on arriving at the event with empty seats in your car, please get in touch with your club mates now and arrange to share. THANK YOU for your help. We would like to be able to invite you to Brimham again and this will help.

Claro invite you to enjoy a new side to Brimham Rocks, along with the extreme crags and rocks on all courses. If you came to the recent night event, this event will use largely different areas. We are hoping for a clear, sunny day as the views from Hare Heads are spectacular. The current 1:4000 map is being extended and updated by Quentin Harding.

Courses for all age classes from Black to Yellow (the area is not conducive to a White course). A free string course near the car park / assembly will be provided to entertain the youngest orienteers in your family.

Meet at the main National Trust car park – free to cyclists, pedestrians and NT members or £6 per car (for 4 hours). Sign up for lift sharing on RaceSignUp to spread the cost or maybe bag yourself a NT member.

Please share transport if at all possible. Brimham Rocks is understandably popular, and the NT is concerned that its other visitors may not be able to fit in.

Public toilets and outdoor cafe available. You are welcome to stay for lunch and play on the rocks afterwards.

Prize-giving as soon as possible in the main car park.

10 minute walk to the start.

Finish near car park.

COURSES & YHOA CHAMPIONSHIP CLASSES

If you wish to be competitive for the YHOA Champs, please ensure you enter the correct class. Your own age class may be on a different course to the one you usually run, as we are giving each cohort the course we believe they will enjoy the most – please check. If you run a longer course than the one for your age class, you will be automatically allocated to the class nearest to your own: if you want to be competitive in another class on that course, you must inform the entries secretary – see contacts below – in writing in advance*. You can only be eligible for one class. Prizes for YHOA adult winners and first three juniors (10-16).

(*Thus an M50 running up on Black will be automatically allocated to M35 – the oldest male class on that course. If that M50 wants to be eligible for M21 instead, they need to write in and say so. Equally, an M16 running up on the same course will be allocated to M18 unless they write in).

Black and Brown have more than 30 controls. The oldest dibbers can only accommodate 30.

Brimham is an extreme and exposed area. Cagoules may be compulsory. If you are not entering the championships, please select any course that will be suitable to your abilities. Depending on your route choices, some scrambling is likely on physically tough courses. All competitors go near very large crags – take care where you run.

Hare Heads is a beautiful sloping area of rocky outcrops with stunning views. Even in winter the bilberry and heather add to the physical challenge. All courses pass through here, then round to the main Brimham rocks and crags. Here undergrowth is not an issue however the rocks are complex and some slopes very steep.

IMPORTANT FENCE INFORMATION – The National Trust have erected a new fence around the Hare Head’s moorland with the plan to introduce Belted Galloways to keep the vegetation down. The cows won’t have moved in by the date of the event. The fence has been erected this winter and we have just had time to add it and the crossing places (stiles and gates) to the map. You will cross the fence (through a gate) on the way to the start and then again about half way round your course where you must use a crossing place to do so. These will be marked on your map. The fence will be drawn using the un-crossable fence symbol; it is not over-printed in purple as this would obscure your map however you must not climb it.

String Course

We are delighted that Liz and Will Drewe have offered to set up a free string course. This will be 100m from the car park / assembly and in an area not used on the main courses. Runners on the string will be largely visible from String Course HQ in the centre of the area. All welcome.

ENTRIES AND START TIMES

Starts from 10.30 to 12.30. Courses close 13.45 so start early if you wish to take your time. Choose a fifteen minute start block when entering. Start times will be open however we appreciate you sticking to your start block to spread out competitors. As we have extended the start times to include 12.15-12.30 you are welcome to move to this block so long as you do not anticipate being out for more than 75 minutes … Controls will be collected in progressively to enable completion.

Entries through RaceSignUp here. Entries close end of Sunday 5th February. We hope to be able to provide some late entries, as long as we have not exceeded the entries limit (set at 320). Any available maps will be added to RaceSignUp numbers after the closing date.
